Facebook Announces New Features for Messenger

Last 30 April 2019 - 01 May 2019, Facebook held its F8 Conference and dropped a lot of news about their plans for their applications. They announced upcoming updates to expand the services they can offer, and Messenger is on that list. Those additional functions will focus on broader communication, advertisements, and content management. But what are those new features in store for their popular messaging application?

Here are some of the updates stated by Facebook:

1. Messenger for Desktop
Messenger became known for its important presence in mobile phones, thriving in the field of portability and accessibility. But later this year, desktop users will no longer be left behind. By downloading the application on Windows or MacOS, users will be able to make group calls and work on projects while chatting. This is a handy feature because it allows businesses to have better workflow by letting them conduct a live meeting.

2. Close Friends Option
Focusing on privacy, this option permits the limiting of posts that you see and who will see yours. This lets you have control over the Stories feature by allowing you to filter its contents and set the board to show updates from those who matter to you the most. In addition, there will also be an emoji status option that displays a short description of what your friends are doing at that moment. This way, you will be able to know if your friend is available for a trip or is currently busy.

3. Advertisement Templates
This allows businesses to connect with their potential customers easier by letting them interact and assist people without actually doing the job. For example, if someone sees an ad on Facebook and clicked it to set an appointment, they will be directed to a Messenger chat where they will be asked to answer questions that will secure their schedule. Throughout that process, the one who manages the business can sit back and relax for they do not have to reply personally. In some way, this feature is similar to the work of chatbots.

4. Group Video Viewing
After this feature rolls out later this year, people would be able to view a video together at the same time. While watching, they can chat and share their thoughts about the video in real time. Also, compared to live streams, Facebook said that this update would enable people to see a video within their chat groups.

Overall, this year looks bright for Messenger. With all these upcoming neat features, it is expanding into a bigger and flexible application that can accommodate the needs of its users. We still do not know if those changes will be delivered smoothly, but so far, what Facebook dropped about Messenger on their F8 Conference looks promising. If this continues and they develop this application into something more, it will surely be more relevant and will gather more people into its community.
