Twitter Strengthens Their Approach Against False Election Information

Twitter is expanding its efforts to stop the spread of wrong information that may confuse voters.

As stated by the platform last 24 April 2019, they are launching a new reporting feature to remove materials that have the purpose of manipulating or interfering in elections. This option involves users being able to select a dedicated category when reporting a tweet and adding specific details on why it misleads them. Is it useful? Yes, because by separating these cases from others, their team can notice them faster and potentially remove those harmful tweets before a lot of people see them.

How do you use it?

1. Select the 'v' symbol on the upper right section of the tweet and choose 'Report Tweet'.
2. Among the categories that will be presented, select 'it's misleading about voting".
3. Select the category that fits your complain and type the details on why that post is spreading wrong information.
4. Submit it by selecting the 'Send Report to Twitter' button.

Additionally, Twitter has stated the types of content that qualifies as a violation. Those types are the following:

1. Methods of voting or registering that are not true.
2. False requirements for voting.
3. Misleading news about an official or schedule of the election.

If proven true, tweets that match those violations will be deleted. Removal of posts due to those reasons are no longer new. It had occurred before during the US midterms when they deleted more than 10,000 accounts for releasing fake reports. This example shows how serious they are about this and how much they would go to make their platform as clean as possible.

Twitter's new feature cannot filter out every misleading information in an instant. With millions of posts being published every day, it is hard to monitor and keep the site free from such harmful tweets. Even so, their action is enough to show that they do care about the promotion of social media literacy. However, no matter how many options are released to combat misinformation, it is still up to the people to use them wisely. So these coming elections, let us all be vigilant and responsible in the posts that we are going to like or share.
