Google Chrome recently celebrated its 10th birthday, and it was huge. Aside from our resident No Internet Connection T-Rex running around with a party hat on its head, Google has decided to give its users a present instead: a significant browser facelift.
Quoting Google’s blog announcement, “Every time you open your browser, you have a mission to accomplish: trips to plan, emails to send, stories to read, skills to learn. We built Chrome to help you do all of those things as quickly and safely as possible.” And they did. On the date of Google Chrome’s exact anniversary, they dropped a major update that made the browser faster, smarter, and more personal.
Here is a summary of the browser’s makeover:
- A new look. More rounded shapes, new icons, and a new colour palette. It is simpler and easier to navigate.
- Things are faster. It can now fill in personal details more accurately and securely so that checkout forms can be a breeze.
- Instant. The Omnibox search bar will show immediate answers to questions.
- Personal. A newly-opened tab’s background can now be customized.
- Safe. An ad filter and a site isolation has been launched to help protect users against malicious or annoying websites and adverts.
While this is an updated celebrated by many users, however, this is not the case for those involved in the SEO community.
For one, because Google has improved and simplified the look of their browser, some ‘non-aesthetic’ elements have been hidden away. The address bar now not only stopped showing if a page is HTTP or HTTPs but also no longer displays if it is www or non-www.
This received negative responses from SEOs who want to quickly look at the canonical URL of a page. Here is an example of users expressing their concern:
Another removed feature is the green label in the URL bar. An address is now only accompanied by a grey lock, and eventually, a URL will ultimately be free of a “Secure” label. Only non-https URLs will have "Not Secured" labels.
And that’s it. While there are concerns related to some aspects of this update, there are also many users do enjoy the enhanced services that Google Chrome has to offer. Technology is continually growing, and so is Google, so what we can do for now is to stay tuned and see what more the browser has to offer.
