Facebook Says Goodbye to Messenger Codes

For those who are using Messenger Codes in promoting their brand, it is time to revert to the old ways because Facebook is going to shut down this feature.

On 15 August 2019, the option that allows users to start chatting with people who are not yet in their contacts will no longer be available on Messenger. The camera will no longer scan those special generated codes; the blue design that people see around a person or brand's profile picture. There is no definite reason on why they decided to do this but based on the note posted on their development site; perhaps the action is driven by their want to make things simpler. Besides, not a lot of people knew or use it so it will not cause too much trouble.

Yes, Facebook's Messenger Codes option will be dead soon, but advertising on the social media site in a similar way is still alive. Thankfully, QR Codes are here to stay and ready to assist marketing teams in their efforts.

But why use QR Codes?

They are simple and tested. They have been around for a while and even became the first thing that pops out of people's minds when thinking about scannable links. Also, most phones nowadays even have the ability to detect and scan those codes without the help of applications. With this in mind, if used in a digital marketing strategy, this type of code will guarantee more views because people have easier access to them.

How do we set up a QR Code for Facebook marketing? Here are the steps on how to do it:

1. Copy your URL.
Messenger accounts have a specific URL. Those are the links that appear whenever you open a chat. For example, https://www.messenger.com/t/messenger/. Highlight the one for your page and copy it.

2. Generate the QR Code.
Visit a QR Code generator page and paste your copied messenger URL. Do the necessary steps depending on the site that you are using and create the code.

3. Scan it.
After an image was made for your URL, try it yourself if it really works. Grab your phone and launch that camera then point it to the code that you want to scan. Since the URL that you used came from Messenger, a notification should appear saying that you can open the link through the application. If your chat bot's message appeared after opening it, your QR Code is good for sharing.

Messenger Codes' death is inevitable, but not impactful. If there are no plans on improving the feature or creating a demand for it, then Facebook has made a good choice on cutting it off. Besides, even if there are no codes, digital marketing on the social media platform will still be healthy and strong. It is an additional method and not the main one that supports the whole campaign, so there is no need to worry about it too much.
