Facebook Events Goes Local!

Contrary to its successful global outreach, the Facebook app Events has gone local! Facebook now lets you see what’s happening in town, discover the hottest places to dine, drink (bars and restaurants are newly-added categories), upcoming concerts, art shows or even meet like-minded folks in a local workshop event. No wonder Local, the rebranded Facebook Events app is becoming disruptively popular.

What does this mean for the avid Facebook user? Noticed those events-nearby notifications from Facebook? I just thought how cool it could be to be in the know. See who’s coming to which event and share plans for a weekend jam with your buddies. You can’t help but get excited about the possibilities.

What can you do with Facebook Local? One must be logged on to Facebook to access the app. This means that Facebook has factored in the interests you follow, recently RSVP’d events, your friends’ events, establishments or businesses that you or your friends have liked. It has a Guides feature that allows you to categorize the interests for which events you want to get notified. Selecting a spot will display hours, location, reviews or ratings, recommendations from friends and even popular keywords that other searchers use. All your event invites and RSVP’s go to the Calendar tab. You can also import your phone’s calendar to get all events in one spot and get a reminder on the day of the event.

For local businesses, this is a whole lot of opportunity to get discovered. The more events launched means more chances to be on the local radar and more chances to be discovered. For example, restaurants can include contacts, directions using third-party map and link to deliverers. Spectators are looking at Facebook Local to become a legitimate competitor of Yelp or Foursquare if they put more effort in promoting it. If that happens, there is a big possibility that businesses will invest more in their Facebook pages, bring their offline events to Facebook and get organic exposure through social content.

With the possibilities that lie ahead of Facebook Local, both end-users and businesses alike will likely benefit from its game-changing features as it enables them to level up their event management activities through the social platforms.
