A New Milestone For Pinterest

There are so many competitors in the field of social networking that it has become difficult to catch up on attracting a specific user count, more likely enticing a monthly user base. Take Pinterest for example; they are lagging a bit behind from major social competitors like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. With Facebook reporting to have 1.4 billion daily active users (with most of it outside the US, 1.2 billion to be exact), while Instagram has hit 1 billion monthly active users in June, and the closest to Pinterest in terms of MAU which is Twitter, reported in July to have gained 335 million active users. Not yet included in the reports is Snapchat’s list of monthly global active users, but they did say they have 100 million active users within the US and Canada. The competition is tight on this one.

But for Pinterest, it’s indeed a new milestone to have reached 250 million active users just as almost two years ago, they gained 150 million users. More than half of these numbers are users located outside the US, 80 per cent of which are new sign-ups that are also outside the country. Pinterest is known for their “pins”  which also gains them a following, and included in the report was that they reached 175 billion pins, which is a 75 per cent increase from last year. And then in April, they reported seeing 1.5 million businesses on the platform, with a “50 per cent year-over-year increase in small-to-midsize business advertisers.” (Gesenhues, 2018).

After Pinterest’s head of products left earlier this year, the company reorganised its consumer products and ad teams. There are significant changes that happened in two months time after the company appointed its first-ever Chief Operating Officer, Francois Brougher. And then led by Lawrence Ripsher, Senior Vice President of Product, the company combined the consumer and ad product divisions.

Just last month, the company released wide-format Promoted videos to all advertisers followed by the launching of enhanced business profile pages in April. And as Pinterest has been rolling new perks for advertisers and business on their platform, their growing number of monthly active user base can be a big help to attract more brands. Social Networking is one big marketplace. The more people a network gains, the better the company’s venture is. It’s just like the saying goes, the more, the merrier.
