Breaking News: Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp are Merging?

You probably have many friends online. Perhaps they're from the same country as you are in, maybe they're from the other end of the world. Perhaps they primarily use Facebook Messenger for chatting, or maybe they're fond of WhatsApp instead. Whatever the circumstance, have you ever felt it a hassle to switch between apps to reply to one friend and another? You probably have at one point.

But what if you could answer them all through one platform only?

That's our exciting news! Facebook is planning to integrate its messaging services of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The applications will still function independently, but the difference is that users of one app, Facebook Messenger, for example, can message those using another app like Instagram. According to The New York Times,  this feature will be ready by the end of 2019 or early 2020.

That's a fantastic change and all, but why would they make this move? Here are some reasons:

Chatbots. The integration will be especially beneficial for businesses who are taking advantage of the services of chatbots. Creating different chatbots in three platforms can be more time consuming than desirable, so being able to send messages to three messaging platforms by using only one saves resources. That also enables a broader reach and demographics for marketers.

Alternative to Email. Email addresses are mostly ubiquitous, as many platforms require the ownership of an email address before usage. Email marketing, therefore, holds a lot of potential in the field, yet hordes of unsolicited emails and spam emails make it awful. The merging of three large messaging applications could potentially rival the ubiquity of email marketing and, at the same time, users could look forward to the elimination of spam messages as per Facebook's guidelines. It's a win-win situation for both marketers and consumers.

These are only some of the benefits of this news. That is a significant shift in the broader communications landscape, and we can wait and see how this change will play out.
